BEYOND A FACE

Some portraits from the Women in the Art World series have been exhibited in this exhibition from 30 May - September 2021

A portrait of someone else, a self-portrait or an ideal? When will it be a good portrait? Dealing with a portrait and reflecting on its fundamental nature raises both formal and existential questions. By juxtaposing different artistic points of view, an exciting dialogue develops between the realities. With works by Billy & Hells, Hartmut Frien, Wolfgang Kleber, In Sook Kim, Horst Kistner, Annie Leibovitz, Erwin Olaf, Vincent Peters, Carla van de Puttelaar, Bettina Rheims, Vee Speers, Andrea Stappert, Martin Steffen, Ruud van Empel, Manfred Vollmer and others.

Sotheby's New York: Hester Diamond - Fearless, January 2021

One of the portraits of the legendary Hester Diamond  from the Art fully Dressed series was chosen as the main image by Sotheby's.  Sotheby's relates: 'Dynamic, unpredictable, and incomparable, Hester Diamond was a fearless and visionary collector. Whether through the expressive qualities of the paintings and sculpture in her apartment, the electric colors of her furniture, or in the mesmerizing patterns of the textiles she chose, each piece in her collection personifies Hester’s distinct vision and the freedom that came with being true to herself. The ability to pursue her passions with such conviction and clarity not only propelled Hester to build an extraordinary career as a venerated art dealer and interior designer, but, in a remarkable feat, to assemble important collections of both Modernist works and Old Master Paintings and Sculpture from the ground up that were of equal quality and breadth. '

Wonderful interview of Head of Auction Sales for Sotheby's London, Christopher Mason, with Diana Scarsbrick FSA, one of the world’s most admired and respected antique jewelry experts, on the occasion of their auction Small Wonders: Early Gems and Jewels.
Carla van de Puttelaar had the honour of taking Diana's portrait on her 89th birthday.  Have a look at the Sotheby's website for the complete interview.

Diana Scarisbrick on the Art of Gem Engraving

Please see an excerpt of the interview below:
Christopher Mason: "Diana, it’s truly a great pleasure for me to interview you on your subject of specialism. Perhaps you could begin by explaining how you came to be interested in cameos and intaglios?"

"Well my dear, I used to work as a journalist in the 1970s and I always found I was on the fringes and never really made a special subject my own. I used to be a kind of shop hound for an Italian art magazine. That’s how I got into galleries and started looking at things and buying things myself, especially rings. I have always been interested in sculpture because we had sculpture in our home and I learned to live with sculpture and to appreciate it. The problem is though, that if one doesn’t live in a stately home one can’t go on buying marbles and things!"

Portrait of Agnes Gund on the cover of the Philanthropy issue of Town & Country Magazine.

Portrait made by Carla van de Puttelaar of the legendary Agnes Gund is on the cover of Town & Country Magazine.

Philanthropist and art patron Agnes Gund is one of four cover stars for this year’s Philanthropy Issue. Gund’s “Art for Justice” fund gives grants to artists and advocates working on the crisis of American mass incarceration. But her philanthropy doesn’t end there. “Aggie didn’t simply make one of the largest single donations to comprehensive criminal justice reform we’ve ever seen, she did the uncomfortable things activists do,” says lawyer and social justice advocate @bryanstevensonoffical, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. (Stevenson’s book, “Just Mercy,” inspired Gund to take a stand.) “She went to San Quentin Prison, in California. She went to Louisiana’s massive plantation prison in Angola, surrounding herself with the rejected and condemned who have been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.”

More than four hundred talented women from the international art world, dressed in special clothing were already captured by her. She is one of them herself: Carla van de Puttelaar. Her portrait series Artfully dressed: Women in the Art World combines the personal stories of powerful women in the arts with her own preference for designer clothes and fabrics.
Carla van de Puttelaar exhibited worldwide and was awarded various prizes, including the basic prize Prix de Rome and a Zilveren Camera. Several of her nudes were part of the group exhibition Naakt of Bloot? (Nude or Naked?) (Museum Jan Cunen, 2019) and she will soon have a large solo exhibition at the MNHA in Luxembourg. In recent years, Carla has worked in the Netherlands and abroad on an ongoing portrait series, in which she portrays women in the art world in special attire. A selection of them has already been shown in various locations, including at TEFAF New York, late 2019. From 9 February to 20 September 2020, Museum Jan Cunen presents the first show of this series in a Dutch museum with an exhibition of more than 60 of the most beautiful portraits and stories and the launch of the Women in the Art World book, which includes more than three hundred photos.
The project focuses on women in the arts, but also touches upon a few delicate spots. For example, the number of women in higher positions in the world of the old masters is still low. The painful fact that female artists have very rarely been included in art history books has become an international point of attention and discussion in recent years. Much can still be gained in that area, also in terms of inclusiveness in a broader sense. Carla says about this: “Since the start of the project I have met so many special women and I am deeply impressed by their talents and achievements. With my project, I bring as many women as possible into the limelight and I am proud to see them reinforcing each other in this growing group of women. By supporting, stimulating and being generous to each other, women will be able to develop further and the way we think and see each other will change fundamentally.”

BANK OF AMERICA AND TEFAF NEW YORK FALL 2019 HONOR FEMALE EMPOWERMENT WITH THE ACCLAIMED EXHIBITION “ARTFULLY DRESSED: WOMEN IN THE ART WORLD”

(New York, NY) – September 30, 2019: TEFAF New York Fall 2019 and long-standing sponsorship partner Bank of America are pleased to present the next installment in the celebrated portrait series “Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World,” by Amsterdam-based photographer Carla van de Puttelaar. Sixty of Puttelaar’s powerful and diverse photographs will line the hallways of the first and second floors of the Park Avenue Armory, where the Fair will take place from November 1 - 5, 2019. The exhibition is curated by Rachel Kaminsky, Program Director of this portrait series.

Van de Puttelaar’s work celebrates the accomplishments, strength and beauty of prominent and promising women in the art world across a wide spectrum of professions, nationalities, ages and cultural backgrounds. Begun in Spring 2017, this project’s original aim was to heighten the visibility of these talented women through portraiture, and has since grown to a series of over 400 professionals from every continent. A trained art historian, Van de Puttelaar draws inspiration from great Old Master portrait painters such as Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals and Peter Lely.

“It is a pleasure to partner with Bank of America on this project that is, at its core, so meaningful to both our institutions as we seek to shine a spotlight on the women who are changing our world for the better.” says Sofie Scheerlinck, Managing Director of TEFAF New York. “There can be no better place to view these moving photographs than at TEFAF New York Fall, where they are juxtaposed by ancient and old master work as a testament to the enduring power of the portrait and its ability to tell untold stories that matter.”
